Course Title: JBTE/SC205 – Basic Life Sciences
Credits: 3
Duration: 45 Hours
Prerequisites: Secondary Science and Technology Teaching I and II
Course Summary
Science teachers serve as managers of the learning environment, organizing human and material resources to achieve meaningful educational outcomes. To do this effectively, they must be grounded in all strands of the secondary school science and technology curriculum: earth sciences, physical sciences, and life sciences.
This course addresses the life sciences strand by providing trainee teachers with a solid understanding of the structural and functional relationships within living systems and the strategies organisms use to survive in their environments. Emphasis is placed on how biological systems function, regulate, and perpetuate themselves. The course also integrates pedagogical approaches, requiring students to apply effective teaching strategies to life science topics. Additionally, students will participate in field studies to encounter organisms in natural ecosystems, with an emphasis on environmental preservation and conservation.
