COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will explore the influences of African music, classical, American gospel, blues, jazz, soul, R&B on Caribbean music like ska, rocksteady, reggae, dancehall, calypso and soca as well as the influence of Caribbean music on popular music, including hip-hop and afrobeats.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
To heighten students’ awareness of the influences on Caribbean music as well as the influence Caribbean music has on other genres.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Identify the different genres of music discussed in the course
Identify at least one unique feature of each genres
Identify at least one major artiste/composer associated with each genre
Identify at least six patterns of influences among genres
Discuss their favorite genre and point out at least one musical influence
Listen to a piece of music and identify the latest trends and musical influences
CONTENT:
This will be an interactive course where students will be immersed in listening to and discussing music. Spotify playlist, YouTube videos, FB music posts as well as students own playlists will be utilized. Lectures and videos on musical art-forms will be presented.
Weeks 1 to 8: The focus will be on African, Classical and African-American music.
Week 9 to 14: The focus will be on Caribbean music
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:
Face-to-face classes (M/W/F 10:30 -11:30 a.m.) - AV Room
ASSESSMENTS:
On-going classroom discussions and assessments (40%)
Attendance (5%)
Engagement (5%)
10-15 minute classroom presentation (to be assigned) (20%)
Final exam – multiple choice (based on material covered during course) (30%)
(Discussion assessments grades during weeks 7 and 14)
(Final exam is planned for the Friday of Week 14)

However, there will be required online reading, videos to watch, and music to listen to.
