COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course focuses on sexual reproduction in plants and humans. It deals with asexual and sexual reproduction, the advantages and disadvantages of each, the principles and importance of vegetative propagation and the genetic consequences of asexual reproduction; the structure and functions of the male and female reproductive organs, gametogenesis and menstruation and their hormonal regulation, fertilization, implantation, structure and role of placenta, role of the amnion and the effects of maternal behaviour on development of the foetus – use of alcohol and nicotine, contraception; the structure and function of the flower, pollination, fertilization and fruit development.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

On completion of this module, students should:

1. understand asexual reproduction and vegetative propagation;

2. understand sexual reproduction in the flowering plant;

3 understand sexual reproduction in humans.
