COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course seeks to acquaint students with of the concepts of Production and Operations Management (POM) understanding the operations involved in the production of goods and services and the importance of productivity of goods and services. With an appreciation for the tools and techniques required for POM, students will become aware of the impact of the external environment on the POM function.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of the course students should:
- understand the operations involved in the production of goods and services;
- develop an awareness of the importance of productivity and quality in production;
- appreciate the importance of tools and techniques required for production and operations management; and,
- be aware of the impact of the internal and external environment on the production and operations management decisions.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
Students should be able to:
- describe the major decisions involved in the production process;
- assess techniques involved in forecasting;
- differentiate among the strategies involved in product design;
- examine the various methods used in production;
- examine various strategies used in production layout process;
- discuss the concept of capacity planning;
- evaluate the importance of costing in production;
- create production costing statements and break-even charts;
- examine the concept and practice of inventory management;
- apply the principles of lean production and quality management to the management of production and operations;
- evaluate the methods of measuring and improving productivity;
- assess the importance and application of project management.
