Approaches are provided for Board members or staff of a CSO to ensure that their strategic plan is a living document that helps give meaningful direction to decisions. The course demystifies the term strategic planning; to highlight principles for how to do it well and to identify some useful tools to use. The aim is to make strategic planning become more meaningful, alive and achievable. This course highlights key components and essential approaches for Civil Society Organisations of all sizes to effectively achieve their mission.


This course take the learner through the CSO quality landscape, beginning with locating quality within the vision statement of the organization. It traces the sources of quality parameters for a CSO and complements them with guidelines on strategic thinking for incorporation in to a management system. The means to develop, monitor and improve upon the quality of the goods and/or services rendered are also provided.

A Theoretical and practical approach to leadership and management, geared towards, community-based organizations. A practical set of guidelines, perspective and tools to develop and or implement policies that will determine the success of the targeted organizations. The intrinsic differences and synergy with respect to management and leadership are explored using scenarios and Caribbean cases studies. The material is heavily biased towards Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)

Course learning outcome:

To develop trainee's leadership and management knowledge, skills and attitudes with particular reference to Civil Society Organizations
